FAQs

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy, or hypnosis, is a special therapeutic technique that takes participants into a state usually characterised by relaxation, absorption in the imagination, heightened suggestibility, and sometimes by a trance like state. The more you are open to hypnotherapy, the more effective it is likely to be.

How do I know if a potential hypnotherapist is actually qualified?

Always look for a hypnotherapist with professional training (as Jaimie has), as there are many (especially stage hypnotists) without any. Jaimie studied Hypnosis, Mindfulness and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) with the UK College of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy.

How does real hypnotherapy compare to stage hypnosis like that done (e.g by performers such as Derren Brown)?

Take any hypnosis you may have seen on tv or stage with a generous pinch of salt. Stage hypnosis has very little to do with clinical hypnotherapy and has been shown to foster misconceptions which can prevent people from benefiting from treatment.

What can hypnotherapy help me with?

Hypnotherapy can help with an enormous range of different issues. There is extensive scientific research supporting its use in anxiety management, pain management, overcoming sleep disorders, obesity, and treating certain psychosomatic or stress-related illnesses such as IBS. But it can also help you conquer habits such as nail-biting or smoking cigarettes, and for personal development in areas such as sports performance, public speaking, or creativity, as well as for general confidence and relaxation, and for specific fears such as fear of the dentist, heights, crowds, and much more. It can even be used to nurture and elevate specific skills such as creativity and public speaking.

How quickly will I see results?

Hypnotherapy is one of the briefest and most effective forms of psychological therapy. In clinical studies, the average number of sessions required to overcome an issue is just 4-6. Smoking cessation may be achieved with just 1 session and Jaimie has delivered sessions on other issues such as insomnia and eating behaviour that has also resulted in a resolution in just 1 session. Jaimie has personally used hypnotherapy to successfully overcome anxiety, a number of phobias, bereavement, as well as utilizing it to stay calm during times of great transition, and for creativity, clarity and public speaking. She practices it because she knows it works and has experienced the profound and instantaneous effects first hand!

Is there any evidence that it works?

Thousands of positive experimental and clinical research studies have been published supporting the power of hypnosis. For example, it has been recognised as an effective treatment by the British Medical Association (BMA), the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Psychological Association and in NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) guidance used by the NHS in the UK.

Isn’t hypnosis basically mind control? Won’t I be handing over the reigns to my mind during a session?

Hypnosis is definitely NOT a state of mind control! You cannot be made to do anything against your will. You must want to accept any suggested ideas and actively imagine responding in order to experience their effects. Hypnotic suggestion is simply a means of experiencing certain helpful ideas at a level profound enough to directly influence our emotions and behaviour. It’s a special way of using various naturally-occurring psychological and physiological states. It’s a collaborative process in which you allow yourself to follow the guidance of your therapist by using your imagination to evoke positive emotions and rehearse behaviour change.

How do I know if I can be hypnotised?

Everyone can, in principle, be hypnotised. It has been shown to help if you relax, think positively, and imagine the things being suggested. Hypnosis is not a state of sleep or unconsciousness. Roughly 90% of people report being aware of everything that happens, and relaxation helps but is not essential to hypnosis. It’s also completely safe when used in a responsibly and professional manner. Nobody has ever been “stuck” in hypnosis. It’s possible you may feel as though you have been asleep or half asleep during hypnosis, this is totally natural and will not inhibit the effectiveness of the treatment.

What is the point of hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy simply aims to suggest, and plant in your subconscious and conscious mind, positive ideas which lead to improvement in progress towards your desired goals. It’s a simple, down-to-earth, and common sense therapy. By relaxing, thinking positively, picturing your goals and rehearsing fulfilling them, hypnosis can help you to progressively improve your habitual feelings as well as outward behaviour. It’s also the perfect complement to coaching which works on the conscious mind.

I just felt this feeling of strength and openness. My whole chest opened up, my shoulders opened up. I feel like a weight’s been lifted, I feel warm. I don’t know if the weather has got better outside while we’ve been talking but everything feels clearer. I feel excited.” – Hypnosis client
